We all know that there is more to window treatments than merely hanging a pair of curtains. As well as aesthetics, we need to consider aspects such as what purpose the window treatment will serve, and the position of the window being dressed
Questions an interior designer will ask are:
- Does a window treatment need to block out light?
- Should it provide privacy?
- How can we enhance the overall mood of a room?
For example, sheer curtains can create a romantic feel in a room, but they won’t block out any light, which might be important if you are considering using them in a bedroom. Similarly, black out roller blinds will block out light and provide ample privacy, but they may not be suitable fin a more traditional setting.
The position of a window is important to consider when thinking about curtains. For example, if you’re dressing a window that looks out onto the street, you may want to choose curtains that provide privacy. If the view faces onto the garden, then privacy may not be as important, but you may want curtains that don’t obscure the view in any way, so voile ones would be a good option.

Also consider the direction a window faces and the time of day the room will be used. A bedroom that gets plenty of light in the morning may need a window treatment that blocks out all or most of the light, whereas you may want to dress a window in a living room that gets lots of natural light during the day with something that makes the most of the daylight. Taking both these factors of purpose and position into consideration will help you choose window treatments that are both pleasing and practical.
